Why Estepona is called ‘The Garden of the Costa del Sol’

Walk through Estepona, and the first thing you’ll notice is the flowers. They spill from balconies, line pedestrian streets, and climb the walls of whitewashed houses. Even the roundabouts bloom with colour. This seaside town has earned the name “El Jardín de la Costa del Sol” (The Garden of the Costa del Sol), a title that speaks to more than just its floral displays.

Estepona’s commitment to greenery is woven into its identity, shaping a peaceful, vibrant, and beautifully preserved Mediterranean town. But what makes it worthy of this name?

A town in full bloom

Nature plays a central role in Estepona’s charm. More than 23,000 flower pots, arranged in different colours to distinguish each street, create a postcard-perfect setting. Parks, plazas, and gardens bring a sense of calm and beauty to the urban landscape. Even vacant lots have been transformed into lush spaces, ensuring that every corner of the town feels alive.

Adding to its uniqueness, Estepona is home to Spain’s only Orchidarium. With over 1,500 species of orchids, cascading waterfalls, and a striking glass dome, it offers a serene retreat for nature lovers in the middle of town.

Art blends seamlessly into Estepona’s landscape. The Open-Air Museum features over 60 large-scale murals, turning entire buildings into works of art. Walking through the streets feels like wandering through an exhibition where flowers and paintings coexist. Poetry decorates the walls, and sculptures appear along promenades, adding cultural depth to this Mediterranean setting.

A sustainable vision

The town’s green transformation is no coincidence. Urban planning prioritises nature, integrating tree-lined avenues, botanical gardens, and landscaped promenades. Rather than being overshadowed by modern development, Estepona’s surroundings are preserved and enhanced.

Estepona’s evolution continues with an ambitious new pedestrian boulevard project that will transform Avenidas San Lorenzo and España, creating a green public space with plazas, water features, and leisure areas. Designed to be a central gathering point, it also includes eco-friendly transport solutions and a municipal parking system offering affordable daily rates.

Tyrian Residences enhances this vision with the Smart Boulevard, redefining urban living. Noise-reducing asphalt, speed-sensitive lighting, and drought-resistant landscaping ensure sustainability without compromising aesthetics. A smart irrigation system further minimises water consumption, making this space a model for green development in Estepona.

A town that feels like home

Estepona has retained its Andalusian charm. The historic centre remains pedestrian-friendly, filled with independent boutiques, traditional tapas bars, and lively town squares. The mix of greenery, architecture, and seaside living creates a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere, attracting residents and visitors alike.

Whether strolling through flower-filled alleys, enjoying a quiet moment in a shaded plaza, or taking in the fragrance of fresh blooms on a warm Mediterranean evening, Estepona’s identity as “The Garden of the Costa del Sol” is unmistakable.

It’s a town where nature, culture, and a refined lifestyle come together—offering not just a place to visit, but a place to belong.
