For decades, Marbella has been the coast's main draw, with its Golden Mile, its boutiques and its nightlife. A few kilometres west, Estepona has taken a different path, built on wellness, nature and a quieter register.
International hotel groups have made this shift concrete. Their recent openings are reshaping Estepona's profile on the Mediterranean. With over 320 days of sunshine, a restored historic centre, and a coastline that runs for more than 20 kilometres, Estepona has become a deliberate choice for hotel investment, not an accident of geography.

Ikos Andalusia: All-Inclusive Luxury with Michelin Dining and Anne Semonin Spa

Ikos Andalusia was the first international brand to open in Estepona. It sits on the New Golden Mile, an address usually associated with Marbella, though it falls within Estepona. The resort runs on an all-inclusive model with nine restaurants, several run by Michelin-starred chefs. Oliva, by Andoni Luis Aduriz, holds two Michelin stars. Fresco serves Italian dishes by Ettore Botrini. Provence serves French dishes by Pascal Barbot, formerly of Astrance in Paris. A "dine-out" programme also gives guests access to restaurants beyond the resort. Suites
come with private pools, and the grounds run down to the sea.
The Ikos Spa by Anne Semonin Paris pairs French formulas with the surrounding coastline. It has nine private treatment rooms, an indoor heated pool, a thermal suite with steam bath and sauna, and a full fitness studio. Treatments use essential oils and marine minerals.
METT Hotel & Beach Resort Estepona: Modern Lifestyle Luxury and Spa-Driven Calm

METT Hotel & Beach Resort Estepona sits between Estepona and Marbella. It has 249 suites and rooms, many with sea, pool or garden views. Some suites open directly onto the Azure Beach pool.
Six dining spaces cover different registers. Isola serves Italian classics. Ammos serves Greek coastal dishes. Azure Beach runs all day by the pool and the beach. El Bar de Lola serves tapas. Folie serves Mediterranean dishes in an open-air setting. D'lirio serves Latin American food.
Wellness runs through the MOI Spa: an indoor pool, therapists, facials and holistic treatments, set in landscaped grounds. The RAISE Fitness & Wellness gym uses Technogym equipment. The hotel also has private beach access, water sports, and a design that combines Andalusian references with a minimalist palette.
Hacienda del Mar: The First Meliá Collection on the Costa del Sol

Hacienda del Mar, a member of The Meliá Collection, officially celebrated its grand reopening on Estepona's El Padrón beach on July 9, 2026. Marking the first hotel under this exclusive Meliá brand on the Costa del Sol, the property—previously known as Kempinski Hotel Bahía since its original opening in 1999 under the patronage of Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe—now begins a new era following a comprehensive renovation. The transformation has shifted its classic aesthetic toward a bright, contemporary Mediterranean prime design.
To elevate the level of exclusivity, the property reduced its key count to 131 completely redesigned rooms and suites, creating larger and more comfortable spaces. These are set within 45,000 square metres of lush subtropical gardens, offering guests direct beachfront access and three outdoor pools. The newly conceptualized MAIA Spa enhances the wellness offering with six treatment rooms, an indoor heated pool, a Finnish sauna, and a steam bath.
The dining experience has been entirely reimagined across four distinct spaces. Neguri Beach Club sits on the seafront, drawing on nautical club traditions and fresh seafood. El Burladero serves authentic Andalusian dishes using local produce, while Almenara is dedicated to breakfast, and Umbral acts as the sophisticated new lobby bar. Positioned strategically between Marbella and Sotogrande, Hacienda del Mar adds a fresh, experiential approach to the coast. The hotel is pet-friendly.
The Anantara Villa Padierna Palace: Gastronomy, Art and Golf Excellence in Estepona

Anantara Villa Padierna Palace sits in Benahavís, minutes from Marbella and Estepona. The hotel is built in the style of an Italian palazzo and holds more than 1,200 works of art, across 125 rooms, suites and villas. Its three golf courses, Alferini, Los Flamingos and Tramores, have hosted international tournaments.
The Anantara Spa spans 2,000 square metres, with 10 treatment rooms, a hammam, a Finnish sauna and a Greek sauna. The restaurants include 99 Sushi for Japanese cooking, La Loggia and La Veranda for Italian and local dishes, Ola Beirut for Lebanese food, and By The Sea Beachclub for seafood.
Fairmont La Hacienda: Expanding the Western Arc of Prime

To the west of Estepona, near Sotogrande, Fairmont La Hacienda Costa del Sol introduces a new scale of integrated resort. Elevated above the coastline, it brings together natural stone architecture, sweeping views of Gibraltar and Africa, and a design philosophy that balances privacy with openness. With two championship golf courses on site, a destination spa and extensive gardens, it reflects the model of resort living where wellness, sport and landscape converge.
Though geographically part of San Roque, Fairmont strengthens the western arc of the Costa del Sol, linking Estepona with Sotogrande and expanding the corridor of international luxury brands along this coastline. Its arrival confirms the confidence of global operators in the region, reinforcing Estepona’s position not as an isolated destination, but as a key part of a broader Mediterranean luxury circuit.

Why Estepona is Emerging as a Quiet Destination
The presence of Ikos, METT, Hacienda del Mar, Fairmont, and Villa Padierna is no coincidence. Together they mark Estepona's shift from a coastal town to a recognised hotel destination. Marbella is known for its nightlife.
Sotogrande is known for golf and privacy. Estepona offers a walkable historic centre, a promenade of more than 20 kilometres, and a slower pace suited to families.
Connectivity supports this position. Málaga Airport is under an hour away, with direct links to Europe, the Middle East and North America. Gibraltar Airport is 40 minutes away.
Estepona is no longer a quiet alternative to Marbella. Five international hotel groups now operate on its coastline. The city is becoming a hub for wellness and contemporary hospitality, alongside its residential growth.
